Catherine Zeta-Jones was born
on
September 25, 1969 and raised in Swansea, Wales. Born to a working class
family, Catherine displayed all of the traits of a true entertainer
- she became an accomplished singer and dancer at a young age. Her first
role ever was in the musical Annie, and then roles in other musicals
followed. She became a member of an actor's guild by the time she was
15. Not long after that she landed her first leading role; she played
Peggy Sawyer in West End production of 42nd Street. After appearing in a
movie directed by the French director Philippe De Broca's Scheherazade,
Catherine signed to play a part in a British TV series The Darling Buds
of May. This role got Catherine enough recognition to become a star, at
least in the U.K. After starring in an English National Opera production
of Street Scenes, Catherine decided to move on, this time to Hollywood.
After starring in some TV shows and movies, Catherine was discovered by
Steven Spielberg who saw her performance in a 1996 titanic miniseries.
Spielberg recommended her to the director Martin Campbell, who was to
direct The Mask of Zorro. Even though Mask of Zorro was a silly and a
cheap attempt at a movie, Catherine made a great impression on the
audiences and the critics. Catherine Zeta-Jones's status quickly rose to
that of a mainstream actress when she continued to star in such movies
as Entrapment (with Sean Connery) and High Fidelity, directed by Steven
Frears. There is no doubt that Catherine Zeta-Jones is here to stay, all
though it is hoped that she starts to use caution in picking her movies;
she starred in Jan de Bont's much awaited remake, The Haunting, which
proved to be a real disappointment to critics and audiences alike. Maybe
Catherine is enjoying her success too carelessly, and maybe she can
still learn a thing or two from actors who pick their roles with
caution, like Leonardo DiCaprio. Catherine Zeta-Jones should allow us
savor her talent.
