Island Details

Status An Australian external territory, claimed from Britain in 1958. It was discovered on Christmas Day, 1643, by Captain William Minors of the British East India Company, thus the name.

Hot, tropical conditions year round, but the weather can change rapidly when regional monsoons blow in from the northwest.

General Information It's an isolated, quiet place, encircled by a coral reef that remains a popular diving destination, one rich in natural beauty and marine life.

Location Description 190 miles south of Jakarta, Indonesia, about 1,700 miles north of Perth, Australia, and about 2,100 miles southeast of Madras, India.

Terrain The island, volcanic in origin, is the summit of a submerged mountain. Steep sea cliffs surround most of the island, rising to a central plateau up to 361 meters high. A national park, complete with rainforest covers much of the available land space.
