On the north coast of South America, with easy access to the Caribbean Sea, Venezuela has one of the largest oil deposits in the world and some of the best beaches in the Caribbean.
Caracas, the capital, and Maracaibo are its largest cities.
The official language is Spanish and the currency is the Bolivar. The population (1999 estimate) was 23.5 million, with approximately 61 people per square mile. The Orinoco River runs through the heart of the country, dividing the highlands of the southeast from the densely populated cities of the north and west.
