As the second smallest country in South America, Uruguay's population
(1999 estimate) was 3.4 million with approximately 48 people per square mile. The capital city is Montevideo. The official language is Spanish and the currency is the New Uruguayan peso. The climate is consistently mild with numerous sandy beaches found along its coast. The majority of land is agricultural and the country is a large exporter of beef, rice and wool.
