Scotland and its offshore islands are the northernmost part of the UK and occupy about 37% of the landmass. Called Caledonia by the Romans, and battled over for centuries, England and Scotland agreed to a permanent union in the "Act of Union" of 1707. Central Lowlands is the main industrial part of the country. It is also the flatest and lowest lying part of Scotland (hence "Lowlands") The Highlands are in the north, and the most mountainous part of the country. |
