Tonga, an archipelago of 170 islands and atolls, including 5 specific groups, is located directly east of the Fiji Islands, in the South Pacific Ocean. The capital city is Nuku' alofa, the currency is the Pa'anga and the most used languages are English and Tongan.. Population exceeds 100,000, with the vast percentage of residents living on the island of Tongatapu.

A former member of the British Commonwealth, today, Tonga is an absolute monarchy, ruled by King Taufa'ahau Topou IV, since 1965.

Most of the Tongan population subsist on individually grown crops. However, most basic food staples are imported, mainly from New Zealand. The Kingdom's primary exports are bananas, squash and coconut oil products. In recent years, because of the climate and beautiful tropical beaches, tourism has emerged as a real economic factor.
