Status and History Tahiti is part of French Polynesia, a French overseas possession, claimed in 1843. Settled by the Polynesians in 850, it's the largest of the Society Islands, so named by Captain Cook in 1769

Tropical conditions with frequent rainfall in the summer months (November - April). Ideal conditions exist from May - October as trade winds cool the island
