Suriname, the smallest country in South America, is mostly rainforest with highlands in the south and southwest. The climate is moderately hot and tropical. Population of the country (in a 1999 estimate) was 441,000, with more than half of its people living in the capital city of Paramaribo. The country, under Dutch rule for 300 years, gained its independence in 1975. The official language is Dutch and the currency is the Suriname guilder. Bauxite the principal ore of aluminum remains its most important export.
