Dominated by the Andes Mountains along its western coast, Peru is home to the world-famous Inca city of Machu Picchu. This "City of Ruins" is the most popular tourist attraction in South America.
Lima, the capital, and twelve other cities with populations over 500,000 are home to the majority of indigenous Peruvians, most of which are of Indian decent. The population (1999 estimate) was 27 million, with approximately 47 people per square mile.
The official languages of the country are Aymara, Quechua and Spanish. The currency is the New Sol.
