Country Details

Description: Panama includes over 700 offshore islands and is the connecting link (the Isthmus of Panama) between North and South America. It also separates the Caribbean Sea from the Pacific Ocean via the vital Panama Canal. The fertile land rises into a narrow corridor of mountains. Coastal weather is tropical (hot and humid), with a steamy May - December rainy season.

Panama ended its long relationship with Colombia in 1903 and declared independence. In the early 1900s the U.S. built the Panama Canal, and Panama subsequently granted controlling rights. After decades of discussions and negotiations with the United States, control of the Panama Canal was returned to Panama on December 31, 1999.
