Ontario Details

Description: Originally inhabited by Algonquian and Iroquoian indians, the French arrived in 1610, followed by missionaries, and then the British. A safe harbor for British Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, it became the site of many battles during the War of 1812. It eventually became one of the four provinces of the new Dominion of Canada, and today plays a major role in the culture and economy of Canada. It borders four of the Great Lakes, and overall the land is mostly flat, with some hilly conditions to the north of Sudbury. Note that Lake of the Woods belongs in part to the U.S.
