Country Details

Description: Originally settled by the Polynesians, it was first sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642, then visited by famed explorer, Capt. James Cook in 1769. The initial European residents were whalers, followed by farmers, many from Britain and Australia. It was subsequently claimed by Britain in 1840, and then became a self-governing Dominion in 1907. New Zealand is a very mountainous country, one comprised of two major islands (North and South), plus Stewart Island, Chatham Island and numerous smaller specs of land. In this beautiful and rugged home of fjords, glaciers, rain forests, geysers, unspoiled beaches and more, it's obvious why tourism is the largest industry.
