From the 30,000 foot depths of the Mariana Trench, 14 islands emerged from the Pacific Ocean, and today form the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Located north of Guam, and 1,500 miles east of the Philippines, the largest island in the group is Saipan. The northern islands are sparsely populated and some have active volcanoes. In 1986 the United States declared all of the residents of Marianas to be American citizens. The currency is the U.S. Dollar and the most used languages are English, Carolinian and Chamorro. Population exceeds 52,000.
Tourism is thriving, especially on Saipan, the home of white, sandy beaches and a warm, pleasant climate. The majority of tourists arrive from Japan. In fact, most local business signs are in Japanese.
