Country Details

Description: Inhabited for thousands of years by the Mayan civilization, then colonized by Spain, Nicaragua, the largest country in Central America, gained its independence in 1838. It's a land of active volcanos and a history of devastating earthquakes and hurricanes. The vast percentage of people and industry are concentrated in the southwestern part. The eastern half of the country is very flat, sparsely populated, with hot and humid conditions along the Caribbean coast. Civil war in the 80s almost destroyed the economy, and after the defeat of the Sandinistas in 1990, a new progressive government was formed and with US financial aid, a positive future awaits.
