New Caledonia, located about 1,000 miles east of Australia, is a series of islands and atolls. The largest island is Grande Terre, and the capital city is Noumea. The currency is the French Pacific Franc and the languages used are French and Melanesian - Polynesian dialects. Population exceeds 190,000, with most living on Grande Terre. As an overseas territory of France, it depends heavily on that country for financial support. Its major industries include agriculture, nickle mining and tourism. Climate is hot and humid.
