Country Details

Description: Mexico, the world's most populous Spanish speaking country, was inhabited for centuries by pre-Columbian civilizations, including the Aztec, Olmec, Maya and Toltec, then ruled by the Spanish for 300 years. It finally gained its independence in 1836.

Coastal resort cities like Acapulco, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, the isolated Baja Peninsula, and the massive Mexico City metro, with its culture, food, music and history make Mexico one of the most popular tourist destinations on the planet.

It's a mountainous land, dominated by ranges of the Sierra Madre, and numerous volcanos, some snow-capped. Exceptions include the desert conditions in the northwest, the flat Yucatan Peninsula, and the southeastern rain forests.
