Description A dozen major islands, all rugged and green, located about 800 miles northeast of Tahiti. Local population once exceeded 80,000, but fell dramatically because of diseases (smallpox) introduced by explorers like (Capt. James Cook). Made famous by novelist Herman Melville and the painter Paul Gauguin, the Marquesas are considered to be among the most beautiful islands on the planet.
