To determine the distance between two major cities of the world, the method (shown below) uses data from the US Census Bureau and a supplementary list of cities around the world to find the latitude and longitude of two places, and then calculates the distance between them (as the crow flies).

A nautical mile (used almost exclusively in navigation) is a unit of distance based on the length of one minute of arc taken along a great circle. Because the Earth is not a perfect sphere, various values have been assigned to the nautical mile. The international value is 1852 meters (6076.1 ft.)
