is the largest city in Texas and county seat of Harris County. It's relative location is in southeastern Texas near the Gulf of Mexico.

Founded in 1836, it was named for Sam Houston, the legendary U.S. frontiersman, politician and leader against Mexico to create an independent Texas.

Houston is one of America's cultural centers and the home of NASA (the Johnson Space Center), over 40 colleges, universities and educational institutions including the University of Houston and Rice University.

It's famous for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest rodeo in the world, one that attracts more than 1.8 million visitors each year. Houston is also home to the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical center in the world, with a local economic impact of $10 billion. More than 52,000 people work within its facilities, which encompass 21 million square feet. Altogether 4.8 million patients visit them each year.

Home to 18 Fortune 500 companies and more than 5,000 energy related firms, Houston is considered by many as the Energy Capital of the World. The Port of Houston ranks as the nation's largest port in international tonnage and second in total tonnage.

The metro area population is over 4.5 million people.
