Grande Terre, the largest island in New Caledonia, is approximately 1,000 miles east of Townsville, Australia. The capital city of New Caledonia, and its largest city is Noumea, population 98,000. As an overseas territory of France since 1958, the area receives much of its governmental budget from that country. The local economy is based on nickle, in fact, more than one quarter of the world's known supply is found here. The largest area mine is locally owned. |
