As an (overseas department) of France, French Guiana in known for the onetime infamous penal colony on Devil's Island.
Cayenne is the capital city. The population (1999 estimate) was 168,000. Rich inland jungles dominant the central part, while some highlands are found in the south. Today, French Guiana is mostly underdeveloped, however, the European Space Agency's rocket launch facility (for the Ariane Rocket) is found at Kourou.
