As the gateway to two of the world's most famous and historic attractions, (The Galapogas Islands) and the
(Inca Empire), Ecuador is steeped in tradition and a very popular tourist destination.
Quito the capital, and Guayaquil are its largest cities.
The official language is Spanish and the currency is the Sucre. The population (1999 estimate) was 12.8 million, with approximately 105 people per square mile. The Andes run through the heart of the country and Ecuador is the world's major producer of bananas.
