Status and History A British Crown colony, claimed 1612. The first colonists arrived in 1609. Today about 60% of inhabitants are descendants of African slaves, with the balance mainly British.

Warm and humid, with windy conditions, especially in the winter. There is plenty of annual rainfall, keeping vegetation green and lush.
