AUSTIN (30n16, 97w45)
is the capital of Texas and county seat of Travis County. It's relative location is in south-central Texas on the Colorado River.

Originally a buffalo hunting ground favored by Tonkawa Indians it was founded in 1839 as Waterloo and served as the capital of the Republic of Texas from (1840-1842). It was renamed in honor of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas," to then became the official state capital in 1870.

Austin is home to over one million residents, the University of Texas (UT), numerous international high-tech firms including Dell Computer and the 6th Street Entertainment District.

It's often called the "Live Music Capital of the World." and is home to Austin City Limits, PBS's longest running series.

Austin is one of a few U.S. cities with professional ballet, symphony, opera and theater companies. With 20 museums, nearly three dozen galleries and as many as 35 theater companies, the city is experiencing a cultural renaissance and has become one of the hottest destinations in the southwest.
