THE SLEUTHSAYER
"Of the thousands of actors and actresses who have appeared in movies," writes famed film critic Danny Peary, "only a few hundred have become objects of cult devotion. The admiration and appreciation cultists feel for their favorites is different from that extended to the typical movie star—it borders on guilty pleasure. Cult movie stars have given their fans so much pleasure and excitement that they are taken to heart, cherished, championed. There is a sense of discovery and a need to spread the word." And that's where Sleuth comes in...
In this same space—while introducing our second "Women of Fantasy" extravaganza some twenty volumes ago—I pledged: "Hoping you enjoy our out of this world issue as much as its predecessor, we're already making plans for a future third edition." And now we're boldly going fourth...
This time we've endeavored to mix all new nudes of perennial fantasy favorites like Madonna, Kim Basinger, Barbara Steele and Sybil Danning with first time uncoverage of bare beauties from the realms of the cult...and occult. In fact, more than half the wondrous "Women of Fantasy" listed above have never before been stripped in Sleuth...nor in any other men's magazine! "For many," observed the compendium of All-Time Box Office Hits, "the escape into pure fantasy is the essence of the cinema's appeal." Certainly, there's no escaping that it's the essence of Sleuth's a-peel to you!
It's been our mission—and we've decided to accept it—to make these fantasy figures become real. Especially since many of their figures are really fantastic!! In this we differ from cult columnist Tony Crawley, who believes that "the best fantasy woman, like the best fantasy, is not real at all, but fabricated, spun out of the ether. "If that's so, then these Gore-geous gals turn Sleuth into "The Ozone Man"...
"Don't get me wrong," concludes Crawley, "Caroline Munro is a lovely girl {see for yourself on pages 96-7}. I've met her often and like her a lot. But as she admits, she's just as happy (if not happier) shopping at her local supermarket. You don't expect fantasies at the checkout counter. They should stay in the movies." Or in the Sleuth.
